Description
I am downsizing and must sell all of my 12” Shirley Temple doll outfits. This week and the weeks to come, I will be listing Shirley outfits produced from 1960-1961—many are complete or near complete and I will be listing them in order by Ideal’s stock number. To find them, keep checking my Seller’s List:
https://www.ebay.com/sch/antiq45/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ipg=&_from=
If you don’t want to wait, you can request that I go ahead and list a certain outfit that you are interested in earlier than its stock # would indicate. It may take me a week or two to set up and post the requested listing.
I do combine shipping and
if you win more than one auction
, I can ship them in the same package—
so check with me before you pay
and I will send your invoice with an adjusted shipping cost. If you give me enough time, you can also contact me with your zip code and the items you are interested in and I can send you a quote for shipping all in one package.
5 day auction—
This taffeta coat outfit was one of the outfits made by the Ideal Company for their 1958-1962, 12” Shirley Temple doll. It is outfit #9721, labeled ‘taffeta coat and hat’ on page 162 of Tonya Bervaldi-Camaratta’s reference book,
The Complete guide to Shirley Temple Dolls and Collectibles
in
2006.
She states that this outfit was produced in 1960 and came with a straw bonnet and signature purse, which makes me believe that the set in this auction is complete. The picture in Tonya’s reference shows the same hat in opposite coloring (dark navy blue hat with red ribbon and red straw edge). The only other reference book that I found this outfit in is:
Collector’s Guide to Ideal Dolls—Identification & Values
by Judith Izen in 1999.
This fancy coat is in vintage condition in that there is age discoloration on its lace trim (probably darker than what you see in the pictures), both collar and cuffs and I imagine that the taffeta fabric is dingy, though its dark color makes it hard to tell. Perhaps someone who is an expert in Shirley’s clothing will know if a soak in OxyClean or Biz will make the red dye run into the white trim—so be very careful if you are not sure! The gripper snaps are still sturdily attached. The tag inside is dingy and the cut edge has frayed somewhat and could be trimmed. The ‘pressed’ look to the gathers of the skirt would be from being in storage. I see no holes, tears or missing stitches.
The hard-to-find hat does not seem to be damaged and there are no loose or missing stitches. The grosgrain ribbon has only a little fraying on the ends. I am unsure if the red straw was darker when the hat was new. It was flat when I bought the outfit and I will send it to you in a box and stuffed with cotton to help round it out again.
The signature purse has 2 issues: - the only missing paint in the ‘Shirley Temple’ graphic is the top of the ‘l’ in ‘Shirley’; -There is a ¼” tear at the top of the impressed of one of the side seams
I believe the outfit it
may
be complete.
There is a very light ‘mustiness’ to it—let it air out or perhaps spray lightly with Fabreeze? I don’t believe it was even played with.
This dress will be shipped in a box to keep it in the pristine condition that you see in the pictures!

This dress has been in my collection for many years. I have a smoke free home and I do not smell unpleasant odors on it, but I cannot guarantee what environment it came from. In my opinion, this collectable dress will make a nice addition to your collection—
it did in mine for many years!
